Servomax elastomer couplings feature a specially calibrated polyurethane insert, which is preloaded between precision machined driving jaws. The spacers are used for vibration damping, shock absorption, and compensation for small amounts of shaft misalignment. The spacers eliminate misalignment stress that can be transferred across the coupling and insert and onto adjacent shaft bearings, leading to premature wear. Since parallel-shaft misalignment is compensated for by an angular flex across each insert, tolerance increases by more than double with the EKZ spacer, in some cases allowing for 4 to 5 times more offset than with single insert designs. Larger amounts of misalignment can be compensated for with a special convex tooth insert, allowing for additional rolling action as the coupling jaw pivots over the insert rather than causing it to flex.
