New Flame-Retardant Structural Adhesive

June 7, 2006
Devcon's new, flame-retardant 10 Minute™ Epoxy FR is ideal for any OEM assembly that requires a self-extinguishing structural adhesive.

It fills gaps and bonds metals, fabrics, glass, wood, and concrete in all combinations, and its flexibility, impact resistance, and durability make it ideal for securing honeycombed floor and ceiling panels in commercial airplanes.

Mixed as dispensed, 10 Minute Epoxy FR has a viscosity of 80,000 cps, a working time of 10 minutes, a fixture time of 20 minutes, and a functional cure time of 3 hours at 72° F. Bonds pass the federal 60-second vertical burn test (14 CFR 25.853/25.885), and the solvent-free formulation has very low VOC emissions. Once cured, 10 Minute Epoxy FR provides typical peel strength of 25 pli, impact resistance of 10 ft-lbs/in2, dielectric strength of 800 volts/mil, and adhesive tensile lap shear strength of up to 2900 psi (as tested on grit-blasted steel at 144° F).

Two other flame-retardant products from Devcon - 5 Minute® Epoxy FR and Cable Cast FR - provide safety reliability in aerospace, mining, power distribution, and many other applications. Both are solvent-free and cure at room temperature.

5 Minute® Epoxy FR is a fast-setting, clear-drying, general-purpose adhesive/encapsulant for OEM assembly operations such as potting aerospace inserts. As a creamy paste, it is easily dispensed, fills gaps, and bonds metals, glass, ceramics, wood, and concrete. It has a mixed viscosity of 115,000 cps, a working time of 3-5 minutes, a fixture time of 10-15 minutes, and a functional-cure time of 2-3 hours. Once cured, 5 Minute Epoxy FR provides typical tensile shear strength of 2800 psi (on cold-rolled steel) and dielectric strength of 490 volts/mil.

As a black, nonshrinking liquid, Cable Cast FR is a special urethane for encapsulating, insulating, and providing strain relief in electrical connectors and cables. Because it forms a protective jacket or casing with exceptional abrasion, tear, and puncture resistance, it can also be used for repairing and protecting cable splices. Cable Cast FR has a mixed viscosity of 10,000 cps, a pot life of 10 minutes, and a functional-cure time of 2 hours. Once cured, it provides typical tensile strength of 2600 psi, tear resistance of 325 pli, dielectric strength of 300 volts/mil, and maximum elongation of 800%. MSHA approved, Cable Cast FR is ideal for repairing underground mining cables and other cables subject to extreme conditions.
