Mercury-Free Polyurethane Adhesives

Sept. 28, 2006
A new family of polyurethane adhesives contains no mercury.

The eco-friendly Araldite adhesives are for assembling thermoplastic components and other parts that must comply with strict, environmental regulations. The adhesives need little surface prep and set rapidly with high bond strengths to substrates including polycarbonate, ABS, and nylon. They have a 1:1 mix ratio by volume and cure fast, attaining handling strength after 6 hr at 77°F (25°C). Once cured, they have good flexibility with an elongation of approximately 250% and lap shear strength of up to 2.1 kpsi (on primed aluminum panels at room temperature). Araldite 2041-1 and 2042-1 come in 50 and 200-ml dualbarrel cartridges.
