The Wind-Up And The Measure

Sept. 2, 2004
Industrial draw-wire encoders measure linear displacements from 1 to 40 m.

Draw-wire transducers use a drum on which a measuring wire is wound. A rotary encoder or potentiometer connects to the spring-loaded drum, which automatically retracts the wire to an angular position. A minidraw unit is available in 1 or 2-m lengths with incremental or analog outputs. Units from 2 to 40 m provide incremental, absolute, or fieldbus outputs. Typical applications include cranes, elevators, forklifts, and scissor jacks.
