Power-Over-Ethernet Controller

April 1, 2005
Next-generation power-management IC aids in the design of IEEE 802.3afcompliant powersource equipment (PSE).

The quad-port power manager can support operation at 40 to 125°C and up to 128 ports in automatic or port-management mode, and manual operation. The TPS2384 gives low RDSon through use of integrated power field effect transistors (FETs). Paired with a microcontroller, the unit can perform advanced power-management functions and detect legacy capacitance loads. Slope detection of the power device signature resistor allows accurate sensing of demands, even when series steering diodes are present.
