Carbon-filled polyetherimide - Sabic Innovative Polymers

June 25, 2010
The compounds compete with aluminum for aircraft applications.

Carbon-fiber-filled grades of Ultem polyetherimide (PEI) contain aerospace-grade carbon fibers for 38.3-psi tensile strength, higher stiffness, and better impact resistance. The compounds' specific gravity is 1.44, 50% lower than aircraft-grade aluminums.
The materials are designed for compression and injection molding and extrusion. They meet FAA flammability FAR 25.853, smoke density and heat release requirements for OSU 65/65.
