Profibus nodes installed worldwide have surpassed 18.8 million, according to Profibus and Profinet International (PI), the umbrella organization representing 25 offices worldwide and more than 1,400 member companies. According to figures just released by PI, 2006 was a record year with sales of 3.4 million nodes. The popular fieldbus is on track to surpass 20 million nodes by 2008, the target forecast in January 2004. Profibus is a popular bus choice for process automation applications because process instruments and discrete functionality are often required to run side by side.
