Cool Composites

Nov. 3, 2005
Stainless-steel cooling tubes, or heatexchanger cavities are part of a new AlSiC (aluminum silicon carbide) metalmatrix composite.

The patent-pending composites outfitted with cooling tubes improve thermal performance of components as small as microprocessor lids to products as large as IGBT cooler bases. Stainless-steel cooling tubes are preferred for high-purity water systems. Additionally, unlike traditional packaging materials, AlSiC's isotropic CTE (coefficient of thermal expansion) can be tweaked for specific applications by modifying the Al-metal/SiC-particulate ratio. The composite also has a high thermal conductivity for efficient heat dissipation.
