Let's get physical

Once a week at newton.ex.ac.uk/aip the American Institute of Physics sums up the latest advances in Physics, from cosmology to nanotubes. This free digest of physics news is from meetings, journals, newspapers, and other sources. It's provided of free of charge. From the latest bulletin:

The phonon Hall effect (the acoustic equivalent of the electrical Hall effect) was observed by physicists at the Max Planck Institut fur Festkorperforschung and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in France. In the electrical Hall effect, when a current is driven by an electric field that's subjected to an external magnetic field, the charge carriers feel a force perpendicular to both the original current and magnetic force, causing the electrical current to deflect somewhat to the side. But thermal transport is a bit more complicated than electrical transport

Coupling design software

A new design tool called the Internet Coupling Automation Program (iCAP for short) now allows designers to accelerate information exchange for faster, more economical coupling solutions.

Offered by Kop-Flex (of Emerson Power Transmission Manufacturing L.P.), iCAP is for designers using couplings in high-speed applications from steam or gas turbines to compressors, generators, gearboxes, and general industrial applications. In most cases, the tool reduces early design and development time down to minutes. Security features make the drawings viewable only to those representatives authorized by the customer.

iCAP is available to designers who register and qualify at www.kopflex.com. (Otherwise, visit www.emerson-ept.com; click on the Kop-Flex logo there to be redirected.)

Designers can customize their coupling drawings with mass elastic data (weight, center of gravity, and stiffness) and then save their documents with a reference number for future retrieval. iCAP drawings are automatically generated in AutoCAD.
