A review of the day’s top trending stories from Machine Design editors.

Selecting the Best Step Motors

As a Machine Design article notes, the key to effectively specifying the right step motor is to find the balance between efficient operations and performance limitations.

“[The term “Maximize torque at desired speed”] describes the process of selecting a motor that operates at its most-efficient output with maximum available dynamic torque while maintaining operating speed,” the article says. “Doing so should minimize any motor stall, under performance, or other types of failure.

“On the surface, that sounds easy,” it continues. “But trial-and-error motor selection still occurs by both the equipment maker and motor manufacturer. The OEM installs their choice for the motor, but finds it lacking in acceleration, top speed, or life expectancy. They turn to the motor manufacturer who gives them another motor with those three special words, ‘Here, try this,’ instead of determining why the first motor failed.

An in-depth look at the issue and the calculations can be found here.

Advanced Motion Control of Servo and Step Motors

Today’s equipment manufacturers are constantly challenged with finding cost-effective ways to deliver high-performance machines, but leveraging the advanced motion control that servo motors deliver can come at a cost. View the on-demand webinar sponsored by Performance Motion Devices (PMD) to learn how to use two design techniques—current and closed-loop—to achieve advanced motor control. You’ll also hear more about an innovative motion control technique that will achieve servo motor performance at a step motor cost.

IDEA! Awards A Valuable Innovation Showcase

The 2021 IDEA! Awards will highlight the top innovative products created in the last year. The awards program is a showcase for new engineering solutions. It also provides great value for everyone who enters.

For a $500 entry fee, IDEA! Awards entrants receive:

  • A ¼-page article and image in the August issues of Machine Design and Hydraulics & Pneumatics to discuss the merits of the product;
  • A spot in the online version of the IDEA! Awards, which will include a link to the reader ballot. Only qualified engineers will vote on the IDEA! Awards, meaning your product will be judged by the people who also use the products each day.
  • Marking collateral, which will identify your product and company as a “IDEA! Awards Finalist.”
  • A chance to be voted one of the top products in your category, which will include an invitation to receive your awards during the IDEA! Conference Nov. 9-11 in Cleveland.

Also announced at that time will be the winner of the Big IDEA! Award, presented to the product with the single highest number of votes from all product categories.

Get your entry in today. Also, please plan to join us at the 2021 IDEA! Conference in Cleveland. It will be three days of great information and an opportunity to reconnect after more than a year apart.

Click here for a link to the entry form. It’s important to act soon: Entry deadline is July 9 at 5 p.m. CST.
