Actuators lift and lower EQ-36 radar

Lockheed Martin’s new EQ-36 radars track incoming mortars, artillery shells, and rockets, and then calculates where they were fired. The radar, which can scan 360° or a 90° section of sky, uses a pair of linear actuators from Exlar Corp., Chanhassen, Minn., to raise and lower the radar’s antenna into position. Each actuator uses a roller screw mounted inside a telescoping tube to generate linear motion. The radar is being used in Iraq and Afghanistan.
