Case Study: Sinter-Brazed Planetary Carrier for ZF Automatic Transmission
Oct. 4, 2017
Sponsored by Metal Powder Industries Federation
Fabrication of the first sinter-brazed powder metal (PM) planetary carrier in a ZF automatic transmission resulted in a component that optimized design features and exceeded material specifications and properties. The PM design solution for this lightweight carrier met all of the customer’s design and durability requirements which, in turn, resulted in the transmission providing a 12%–16% fuel economy improvement. Overall, using PM delivered an estimated 20%–30% cost savings over alternative manufacturing technologies. Thorough cooperation between fabricator and end user was essential for the successful fabrication of this component.Learn More
