Save time with gearing components

May 1, 2009
Each month, this Time Saving Technology department introduces new products and ideas to help you work more efficiently and become a more effective problem solver. This month, we take a look at some of the newest gearing devices.

Locking device quickly fastens rotating components

The M-Type Shaftloc rotating-component fastening device is a locking mechanism for rigidly mounting hubless gears, sprockets, pulleys, cams, or any thin-walled components onto an inch or metric shaft. It features infinite radial and axial adjustments and quick lock-and-release action. Due to asymmetric thread geometry, a large radial clamping force is produced when the nut is tightened. This two-piece keyless fastener can be installed within seconds, reducing assembly costs. Tightening the nut causes the slotted sleeve to contract, gripping the shaft and clamping the part to the sleeve at the same time; keyways and screws are not necessary, though the fastener can be installed on shafts with existing keyways. Gear reducers, ratio multipliers offer easy cleaning

A new line of stainless steel worm, helical worm, and helical bevel gear reducers and ratio multipliers features smooth surface finish for easy-to-clean sanitary operations. Worm reducers, with 316 stainless steel housing and covers and 303 stainless steel output shaft, are cut, heat treated, ground, and polished for quiet operation. The lubed-for-life units eliminate oil changes and feature double-lip Viton seals for use in harsh environments. Ratings to 17 hp are available; single and double-reduction units with ratios from 5:1 to 3,600:1 are also offered. An Enviroseal pressure-compensating system makes the reducer vent-free and “sealed for life.” Stainless steel, double-reduction helical in-line and triple reduction helical-bevel gear reducers are 93% to 97% efficient with ratios to 138:1 and ratings to 18 hp. Units can be combined with a Washguard all-stainless motor for a complete power transmission package. Stainless steel ratio multipliers, with ratings to 4.7 hp and ratios from 2:1 to 7.5:1, feature helical gearing. The unit can be used as a standalone, single-reduction, in-line reducer or as a bolt-on to the input of a C-faced gear reducer to multiply overall ratio reduction. Visit www.leeson.com.

Gearing products, free CAD drawings available fast

Thousands of standard open gearing products including spur, helical, miter, bevel, worms, and worm gears are available for immediate shipment. Also available are stock altering services (reboring, keyways, and setscrews) along with custom gearing design and manufacturing, including gears made of steel, cast iron, brass, or non-metallic materials. Visit www.bostongear.com to access BostSpec, a program that assists in gearing selection and provides CAD drawings in the most popular 2D and 3D formats. Engineers can also view a catalog of gearing products and accessories, including a comprehensive overview on gear theory, which explains gear nomenclature, tooth formulas, backlash, tooth strength, torque and horsepower requirements, and other standard gear selection formulas.
