Packaging machinery called big opportunity for controls makers

May 11, 2006
The total value of all packaging machinery produced within Europe, the Middle East, and Africa is expected to exceed 15.6 billion Euros by 2009, a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of nearly 5%.

So say automation analysts at IMS Research. IMS analyzed seven kinds of packaging machinery and found that filling and dosing equipment accounted for over 20% of all packaging machinery sales. This segment offers the largest opportunity for automation-component suppliers targeting the packaging machinery market, IMS claims. "Packaging machinery is a particularly attractive market for automation-component suppliers as the automation content of a machine typically accounts for about 15 to 20% of the total cost," says senior analyst Tim Dawson.

"Not only is the packaging machinery market itself experiencing growth," Dawson continued, "but the amount of automation equipment used by machine builders is also rising as companies integrate more robotics, servomotors, and control equipment to make machines more flexible and productive."
