Metal-friendly polyimide targets energy efficient uses

The metal-friendly nature of Dupont Vespel SP-2515 facilitates use of lightweight aluminum as a mating surface for rotating or moving parts.

The metal-friendly nature of Dupont Vespel SP-2515 facilitates use of lightweight aluminum as a mating surface for rotating or moving parts, says the manufacturer, and its wear properties can eliminate heavy, expensive steel inserts, used to protect aluminum parts from aggressive materials such as cast iron or filled thermoplastics. Parts made from the new material have a high termal conductivity to help remove heat from critical bearing surfaces and thus let parts run cooler. Recently commercialized in seal rings, which demand low friction, Vespel SP-2515 is said to have demonstrated more consistent leakage control than cast iron and other polymeric alternatives.
