Redesigning the diesel

April 4, 2002
After confirming that their customers wanted more reliable, more powerful diesel engines, Perkins engineers went to work restructuring their three, four, and six-cylinder engines (53 to 175 hp) with just that in mind.

The resulting water-cooled engines, the 1100 Series, have more power, peak torque, and low-speed torque than their predecessors. The four-cylinder 1104, for example, boasts 130 hp, a 7% increase, and 412 Nm at 1,400 rpm, a 12% increase, and a 41% increase in low-speed torque.

Among the improvements are a new gear train with closer tolerances and revised profiles, better head sealing, improved joints and cylinder bores, and a leak-free design. The redesigned cylinders also use new multilayer steel head gaskets and inlet manifolds for better gas sealing and airflow around individual ports. To keep it leak-free, engineers added carrier gaskets, top covers with peripheral mountings, minimal external piping, leak-free fuel injectors, and press-fit low-pressure pipes.

The three and four-cylinder engines can be naturally aspirated or turbocharged, which is standard on the in-line six version. Electronic engine controls, which are also standard on the six-cylinder engine, are another available option for the four and three-cylinder engines. Engine electronics improves throttle control and lets users customize the torque curve for better drivability and response.
