Seeing X-Rays

The S8658 image sensor converts X-rays to visible light. It uses a front-illuminated full frame transfer charge coupled device (FFT CCD) to create finely detailed X-ray images.
May 20, 2004

A fiber-optic plate with scintillator attaches directly to the CCD chip and converts X-rays to visible light. Three CCD chips each with 1,5363128 pixels are linearly arranged in close proximity to form a long and narrow sensor 22 mm long with an active image area of 73.72836.144 mm2. Applications include nondestructive inspection such as in airport and building-security systems.
