Macor machinable glass ceramics can quickly and inexpensively be machined into intricate and precision parts with ordinary metal-working tools. The white, odorless, porcelainlike material doesn’t need to be postfired. The high-performance ceramic can serve in applications that see 1,000°C and high vacuum. The ceramic also has little thermal conductivity and can work as electrical insulators at high voltages and various frequencies. Rods are available in standard diameters ranging from 1/8 to 6 in. Bars come in standard cross sections ranging from 0.5 × 0.5 to 2 × 2 in. and sheets are available in thicknesses ranging from ⁄ to 2 in.
